Centre on alert, work underway to avoid waterlogging during G20 event in Delhi
The central government has been taking measures to prevent the after-effects of heavy rains during the G20 event scheduled to take place in September in New Delhi.
The central government was made aware of the situation when heavy rains in Delhi inundated the Pragati Maidan tunnel and caused water to back up around the convention centre, where the G20 summit is scheduled to take place in September.
The national capital is preparing to host a group of 20 countries despite the fact that it typically rains until the end of September. The government has been attempting to fix the gaps that can result in waterlogging near the convention centre.
The administration is making sure that after significant rainstorms, the roads leading to the convention centre don't flood. Since seepage is likely to cause water to end up in the delegate seating area, efforts are also being made to stop it from happening.
The government is also taking steps to ensure proper drainage along the highways, seal up neighbouring areas to prevent leaks, and conduct a mock drill to test seepages.
While issues have been noted, efforts are being made to finish everything by the deadline. Work on the centre is currently progressing at a breakneck pace in order to finish it on schedule. Daily progress updates are transmitted to the G20 Secretariat, according to insiders within the organisation, India Today reported.
The drainage problems in the Pragati Maidan region are being handled by the New Delhi Municipal Committee (NDMC) and the India Trade Promotion Organisation (ITPO).
PK Mishra, the Principal Secretary to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the head of the G20 Presidency's Coordination Committee, has been evaluating the location and planning for the next summit and other meetings.
The committee is looking into every area of protocol, security, airport coordination, media coverage, infrastructural improvements, and arrangements in Delhi and the surrounding states.
All organisations are now being urged to collaborate with a global perspective by PK Mishra. At the present, everything from the venue's façade to the amenities like parking, accessibility, and technology are being considered.
Preparations have been in full swing ever since India took over the G20 Presidency from Indonesia in December 2022. One Earth, One Family, One Future was the G20 Presidency theme announced by the Prime Minister.
The subject is based on the long-held conviction in India that "Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam," or "The World Is One Family," applies to all people.
